Special educational needs, social care and health
Better understanding of the proportion of children who ever receive special educational needs (SEN) provision or social care services during school years is highly relevant for healthcare as reductions in one or more of these services could impact on healthcare. Using the National Pupil Database linked to the all-of-England children looked after return and children in need census, we estimated the cumulative incidence of SEN status among (1) children ever in care during school, (2) children in need but not care, and (3) neither. We observed a very high proportion of children who were in care or need during school years had SEN provision at some point (83% and 65%, respectively), and that a high proportion of children in neither of these groups did so, too (37%). Healthcare, SEN provision and social care services focus on a similar population of children. Better integration of these services could lead to synergies and cost-efficiencies and better support for these children and their families
A Nonpolymorphic Class I Gene in the Murine Major Histocompatibility Complex
DNA sequence analysis of a class I gene (QlO), which maps to the Qa2,3 locus in the C57BL/lO (H-
2b haplotype) mouse, reveals that it is almost identical
to a cDNA clone (pH16) isolated from a SWR/J
(H-2q haplotype) mouse liver cDNA library. Exon 5,
in particular, has an unusual structure such that a
polypeptide product is unlikely to be anchored in the
cell membrane. Our findings suggest that the two
sequences are derived from allelic class I genes,
which are nonpolymorphic, in contrast to H-2K allelic
sequences from the same mice, and they may encode
liver-specific polypeptides of unknown function.
Our previous studies indicate that the QlO gene
is a potential donor gene for the generation of mutations
at the H-2K locus by inter-gene transfer of
genetic information. Thus the lack of polymorphism
in class I genes at the QlO locus implies either that
they are not recipients for such exchanges or that
selective pressure prevents the accumulation of mutations
in genes at this locus

Intrusion Signature Creation via Clustering Anomalies
Current practices for combating cyber attacks typically use Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) to detect and block multistage attacks. Because of the speed and impacts of new types of cyber attacks, current IDSs are limited in providing accurate detection while reliably adapting to new attacks. In signature-based IDS systems, this limitation is made apparent by the latency from day zero of an attack to the creation of an appropriate signature. This work hypothesizes that this latency can be shortened by creating signatures via anomaly-based algorithms. A hybrid supervised and unsupervised clustering algorithm is proposed for new signature creation. These new signatures created in real-time would take effect immediately, ideally detecting new attacks. This work first investigates a modified density-based clustering algorithm as an IDS, with its strengths and weaknesses identified. A signature creation algorithm leveraging the summarizing abilities of clustering is investigated. Lessons learned from the supervised signature creation are then leveraged for the development of unsupervised real-time signature classification. Superoperator Analysis of Entanglement in a Four-Qubit Cluster State
In this paper we utilize superoperator formalism to explore the entanglement
evolution of four-qubit cluster states in a number of decohering environments.
A four-qubit cluster state is a resource for the performance of an arbitrary
single logical qubit rotation via measurement based cluster state quantum
computation. We are specifically interested in the relationship between
entanglement evolution and the fidelity with which the arbitrary single logical
qubit rotation can be implemented in the presence of decoherence as this will
have important experimental ramifications. We also note the exhibition of
entanglement sudden death (ESD) and ask how severely its onset affects the
utilization of the cluster state as a means of implementing an arbitrary single

Data Resource: The National Pupil Database (NPD)
Introduction: The National Pupil Database (NPD) is a record-level administrative data resource curated by the UK government's Department for Education that is used for funding purposes, school performance tables, policy making, and research. Processes Data are sourced from schools, exam awarding bodies, and local authorities who collect data on an on-going basis and submit to the Department for Education either termly or yearly. Data contents NPD contains child-level and school-level data on all pupils in state schools in England (6.6 million in the 2016/17 academic year). The primary module is the census, which has information on characteristics and school enrolment. Other modules include alternative provision, exam attainment, absence and exclusions. Data from children's social care are also available on children referred for support and those who become looked after. Children's records are linkable across different modules and across time using a nationally unique, anonymised child-level identifier. Linkage to external datasets has also been accomplished using child-level identifiers. Conclusions The NPD is an especially valuable data resource for researchers interested in the educational experience and outcomes of children and young people in England. Although limited by the fact that children in private schools or who are home schooled are not included, it provides a near-complete picture of school trajectories and outcomes for the majority of children. Linkage to other datasets can enhance analyses and provide answers to questions that would otherwise be costly, time consuming and difficult to find
